GROWERS PAGE
Though Spero Mountain Coffee's origins can be traced back to 1989, the genesis of the coffee company can be traced back to an economic development trip to Honduras sponsored by Heart to Honduras and attended by one of the owners, Jeff Messer. While sitting on the porch of a hillside cottage overlooking the little village of Canchias, the development team was brainstorming ways to help the desperate circumstances surrounding the local coffee growers. Heart to Honduras had already contacted U.S. roasters regarding purchasing from these growers. None were interested. It was determined that the best way to assist those farmers would be to control a market that would intentionally buy directly from them and other local farmers. That discussion was the seed that eventually germinated into the development of Spero (Latin for "hope") Mountain Coffee.
Spero Mountain Coffee has taken several steps in an effort to fulfill our corporate goal of "Channeling resources to Third World partner groups". First of all, Spero became licensed as a Fair Trade Roaster with TransFair USA in December of 2002 and began incorporating Fair Trade coffee into several of our blends in the spring of 2003. In addition, Spero has begun purchasing coffee from coops in Guatemala and Papua New Guinea where the above market prices paid for the coffee are making a difference for the farmers and their families. As our market grows, we will be able to purchase more and more product directly, in the hopes that we can make a difference in as many lives as possible. Your interest and participation in Spero makes a difference not only for the Benefiting Organization you are supporting locally, but also in the lives of those we are partnering with in the growing regions.
Spero Mountain Coffee is actively seeking additional growers with whom we can establish direct relationships. If you know of individuals, groups or supporting organizations which could benefit from our work, please contact:
