The focus of Spero is to provide fund raising vehicles for U.S. based organizations while assisting in creating markets for coffee produced by Spero's indigenous partnership groups.
In 1989 while in the Philippines, Jeff and Heidi Messer were first introduced to the concept of using traditional business models to assist disadvantaged people. A group working with young people from the streets of Manila manufactured toy tops and sold them through contacts in the United States to raise funds for their programs. The early 90's brought the Messers to Kenya and again exposed them to efforts by Kazuri Limited, an NGO (Non-government Organization) which hired single mothers from the slums around Nairobi to manufacture ceramic jewelry, and Daraja Trust whose primary involvement was micro lending. These groups, among many others, attempted to provide economic resources to the disadvantaged through income development.
Spero (Latin for "Hope") Mountain Coffee's origin was influenced by those experiences and additional exposure from time spent in Mexico, Honduras and 10 years of living in inner-city Denver.
Though structured as a for-profit endeavor by design, Spero Mountain Coffee is intentional about utilizing the resources of traditional business markets to assist non-profit organizations and third-world partners.
